Many chronic medical conditions can be more effectively managed, controlled and treated with exercise and physical activity. We provide a safe and effective bridge for the patient to cross from the structured clinical treatment to mainsteam community and home-based exercise. We work with individuals following treatment for clinically documented chronic disease, musculoskeletal injury and/or disabilities and provide effective exercise training for individuals with a compromised immune system for whom home based exercise reduces risk of infection. We can assist in carrying out instructions of the healthcare provider while providing support and guidance to the client. Examples on how we can enhance functional health and fitness for the various medical conditions are listed below. Osteopenia, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis: Preventing osteopenia, better manage and treat osteoporosis and osteoarthritis requires therapeutic bone and joint exercise such the OsteoBall exercise training program. A bone and joint exercise program that combines isometric and isotonic training provides a comprehensive approach to training, reconditioning, and rehabilitation for osteopenia, osteoporosis type I, osteoporosis type II, and osteoarthritis. Cancer exercise recovery: Exercise has the real potential to alter acute and persistent effects with exercise intervention. Exercise is safe for individuals post treatment. During treatment studies have shown that exercise can help breast cancer survivors better tolerate chemotherapy and are able to take the full dose necessary to fight breast cancer. In-home training is particularly important for individuals with suppressed immune systems to reduce the risk of infections. Exercise is safe for individuals at risk for lymphedema when following specific guidelines. Lymph drainage follows muscular movement and assists in returning the lymph fluid back to the heart. For older adults cancer treatment provides the potential for loss of function, exercise can offset these losses in function. Exercise training can help with rehabilitation, reduces, prevents decline in physical function, increases reserve and enhances quality of life, reduced risk of cancer recurrence.
Cardiovascular disease: the right exercise program can prevent and manage hypertension, peripheral artery disease (PAD or PVD)-claudication, coronary artery disease, post by-pass, angina, post heart attack, angina, pacemaker.
Diabetes/metabolic disease: Appropriate exercise can make improvements in lipid profile and blood sugar (A1c) without the side effects commonly experienced with many medications and thus reduces risk factors for heart disease. Improve blood glucose and A1c, lipid profile, blood pressure, reduce body fat and enhance metabolism.
Neurological disorders: The right exercise prescription can dramatically improve functional health and fitness and better manage conditions such as fibromyalgia, stroke, improve physical function with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and spinal cord injury.
Frailty: improving muscle strength, joint stability and balance can significantly improve muscle mass which enhances strength, power and the functional ability of aging adults.
Pulmonary disease: Optimizing oxygen utilizationthrough consistently performed exercisehas been shown to improve quality of life in individuals with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD).
Immunological/hematological disorders: arthritis, acquired immune difficiency syndrome, anemia, chronic fatique syndrome, lupus and cancer. Exercise in particular can be very beneficial during cancer treatment and recovery, especially breast cancer. Exercise and physical activity helps to retain lean muscle tissue, prevent fatigue, slows or prevents bone loss, reduce lymphedema symptoms and enhances quality of life.
