Exercise is the strongest predictor for long-term weight loss and weight management, the only way to retain and regain valuable metabolically active muscle tissue. Carrying extra body weight is known to increase the risk and development of chronic illness such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke. The good news is that many of these conditions can be prevented and improved by making a positive lifestyle change, adopting healthy behaviors and performing beneficial exercise.
The scale only shows total body weight, but even when you are at a healthy body weight range you can still be at high risk. Body composition testing determines percentage of body fat and lean body mass. We also determine and determine body fat distribution, amount of lean body mass and body fat, the risk classifications, basal metabolic rate (BMR) and total energy expenditure(TEE). With a lifestyle modification plan that includes physical activity and exercise, nutritional counceling, menu planning we can help you achieve a healthier lifestyle. We can design an exercise program that improves body composition, reduces body fat, improvesfunction, health and reduces risk factors for developing chronic disease. We work with your health care provider when other medical conditions exist so that you receive the best possible benefits.
Exercise for Diabetes Blood Glucose Management When diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and diagnosed pre-diabetes, blood glucose management is essential for quality of life. Uncontrolled high and low levels of blood glucose damages and destroys red blood cells, nerve cells, brain cells and cells involved with vision. Exercise improves blood glucose levels and lowers A1c to normal or near normal levels preventing cell damage, exercise also reduces body fat (including belly fat), total body weight and improves lipid profile. Most importantly, exercise of appropriate quality and quantity both moderate and intensive utilize blood glucose uptake that are similar to several diabetes drugs (Metformin, pioglitizone, rosiglitizone),but without many of the side effects. Many diabetic drugs have side effects that include weight gain, which makes weight-loss very difficult to achieve without exercise. Many previous participants have been able to reduce or eliminate diabetic drug and are able to manage their diabetes succesfully with regular exercise.
Exercise and Bariatric Surgery Regular exercise is part of the treatment plan after surgery to ensure long-term weight management. We can assist in carrying out instructions of the healthcare provider such as post-rehabilitation while providing support and guidance to the individual. Studies have shown surgery-induced boneloss and fracture risk with significant declines in hipbone mineral density. The calcium and vitamin D deficiencies maybe due to alterations in the gastrointestinal tract(Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 2008). An appropriately designed exercise program offsets these side effects.
